Greetings Occupy Austin IT, et al.
I'm a member of ATX Hackerspace who was present when the Freedom Tower was
brought in for demonstration (at Dorkbot's meeting). I'm also the secretary
of the board there, so if you have some questions about the place itself
feel free to ask.
A few others and myself had a decent-length dialogue with the individuals
who brought the tower in that night. Where it was, what the general plan
was, where it could go, etc. We offered some possible improvement ideas
that might coincide with the goals of OA IT and Tower Ops. There are
specifically some ideas on mast construction, power sourcing and
management, and some networking ideas that our group at ATXHS are keen to
share if there are willing ears.
Myself, I'm a systems administrator with a fair amount of
infrastructure/local networking experience in addition to hardware
knowledge. We run a similar system to (how it sounds like) you guys want to
run the towers eventually out of our space (for the curious: avg 40-node
international hosted-services mesh VPN, plenty of /32 and semi-populated
/24 networks are common), so if its as similar as it sounds like, I'd like
to offer my services in assistance with that as well.
Lastly, in an odd bit of coincidence, another member and I have been
playing around with the concept of long-range point to point data links,
with the idea of running data relay/VoIP/encapsulated POTS over it. I don't
know if this is the kind of thing OA IT or Tower Ops is interested in, but
I figured I'd throw it out there.
tl;dr: I'm interested in helping out, and I have experience with networking
and hardware. What can I do?
